Captain
When I was young I loved sailing. I started in an Optimist and then sailed with bigger and bigger boats. I even entered competitions. That’s how the dream started. I was looking for a new challenge. I wanted to see the world and that combined with my love for sailing made me go to sea.
As a captain I am responsible for the ship and crew. However, it doesn’t only rest on my shoulders. I have a first officer and a chief engineer with whom I operate the ship as a team. You can’t do that all by yourself.
Nowadays everything at sea is more similar, because I am used to it. During my first days at sea, we passed through the Azores. After a few days of only seeing water around you, one morning I saw those islands. So green. It was something special.
I have a wife, a daughter and a son. Being away from home for a long time is more difficult than before they were in my life. But nowadays we can keep in touch every day. I remember when I was at the end of my maritime education. I imagined what it would be like if I could speak to my wife and family from the sea. That was twenty years ago. No one knew yet whether the technology would be able to do that. Now my wife wants me to send videos when I see dolphins during my trip.
In the future I hope to continue sailing without incident until I retire. I don’t know how old I will be when I stop. We don’t know the future. If something happens that makes me stay home, I stay home. But to be honest, I haven’t thought about stopping sailing and what happens next.
