Rommel E. Dela Cruz (27)
Full sailor
I come from the Philippine city of Cuyapo, in the province of Nueva Ecija, known for its extensive rice cultivation. In the Philippines, a lot of rice is eaten, even for breakfast. That’s where we get our strength.
I went sailing because you travel around for free and because you get a good salary. I have already been to Japan, China and Korea and several European countries. In Barcelona I visited the Sagrada Familia. It was my first time there. It was great to see such a famous building in real life. I felt the presence of the church, impressive. I have also been to Rotterdam before with another ship. I think it’s a beautiful city, very modern.
We have movie marathons on board and we talk a lot. It is important to have a good relationship with your colleagues. You have no one else at sea. Still, life at sea can feel lonely. When you are sick, no one takes care of you like your family. I keep in touch with my family and friends through social media such as Facebook, Messenger and Twitch. I miss them when I travel, but luckily we can still see and talk to each other.
I have saved and invested some money. I promised myself I won’t be a sailor forever. What I like best at sea is the beauty of nature. We are often accompanied by dolphins. They give a feeling of happiness and make you appreciate nature.
